CONTROL Resonant Builds
Specialise in The Gap — abilities, Talents, and Artifacts that match your Aberrant lane.
CONTROL Resonant builds are won in The Gap, not in a shared loot endgame. Remedy Entertainment’s upcoming single-player action RPG — digital launch 24 September 2026 — asks you to specialise. You will not equip every Resonant power on a first Manhattan clear, and that is intentional. This page explains how abilities, Talents, Artifacts, and New Game Plus interact so your loadout matches the Aberrant forms tier list instead of fighting it.
The Gap in one minute
Hold Down on the d-pad to enter The Gap, Dylan Faden’s mind-space. Inside you manage weapon trees for Aberrant forms, Talent choices, and the ability loadout earned by defeating Resonants — remnants twisted by the Pattern. Think of it as the sequel’s answer to a pause-menu skill plaza, flavoured as paranatural architecture rather than a flat spreadsheet.
Preview coverage describes two sets of three abilities (six slots total) that you can hot-swap much like weapon forms. That structure rewards a plan: three tools for your primary lane, three tools for a backup lane or utility, not eighteen half-funded ideas.
Rule one: specialise, do not generalise
Resonant bosses are the skill tree. Each major kill can open a new branch, but Spec Points and early unlock density will not let a completionist wear every crown in hour five. Pick a fantasy:
- Aerial crit lane — Flurry Primary, mobility Talents, abilities that extend juggle time.
- Crowd control lane — Slash Primary, area denial abilities, survivability Talents.
- Boss punish lane — Slice or Crush-focused pairing, staggered-window abilities, backstab Talents.
If a World Quest tempts you into a random new branch, park Spec Points until you know the ability synergises. Respec options exist in preview language, but time spent thrashing between identities is still time not spent learning telegraphs.
Talents
Talents deepen the form trees and passive combat identity. Previews show unique dodge starters per Primary and branching upgrades — Slice’s later Lift Shock style nodes are one example of a dodge-attack payoff that changes pack management. Invest along the Primary you actually swing in streets, then fund Secondary charge quality if you live on Crush or Extend commits.
Avoid the trap of buying one node in every tree “just in case.” A half-built Flurry tree plus a half-built Slash tree often feels worse than a fully expressed Slash tree with a single Secondary finish.
Artifacts — three slots, fourth in NG+
Artifacts occupy three slots on a standard run. They are the quiet multipliers: resource finds, damage conditions, defensive quirks, or niche interaction pieces depending on what Remedy ships in the full loot list. Digital Deluxe mentions a Wallet artifact among bonuses — flavour and early comfort, not a replacement for build thinking.
New Game Plus opens a fourth Artifact slot and carries combat progression, not traversal unlocks. Plan NG+ as a specialisation encore: keep your refined ability six-pack and Talent spine, then use the extra Artifact to cover a weakness (sustain, rare-enemy damage, cooldown comfort) instead of reinventing the entire character.
Ability slots and Resonant routing
Because abilities come from Resonants, your build route is also your boss route. Open-ended Manhattan zones, World Quests, and Bounties let you approach many objectives flexibly, but if your build desperately needs a specific power fantasy, prioritise the Resonant that grants it. The resonants guide explains why bosses double as progression gates.
A practical first-run loop:
- Choose Primary + Secondary pair using the forms tier list.
- Clear early street encounters until the first Resonant is available.
- Enter The Gap, slot the new ability into the matching trio, and spend Spec Points only on supporting Talents.
- Test the package on a Bounty before the next major arena.
- Repeat without opening random branches “for collection.”
Remedy’s length estimates — about 30 hours core, up to 50 with side content — leave room for a second specialised save if you hate your first lane. That is healthier than forcing one file to be every build at once.
Example starter packages (preview logic)
Street clearer: Slash Primary, Extend Secondary, abilities that detonate or push packs, Talents on cleave and dodge safety, Artifacts that favour add density.
Air dancer: Flurry Primary, Crush Secondary, abilities that loft or pause enemies mid-air, Talents on crit and hover windows, Artifacts that reward sustained strings.
Punisher: Slice Primary, Crush Secondary, abilities that amplify staggered targets, Talents on backstab and charge commits, Artifacts that favour elite/Resonant fights.
These are directional sketches from preview grammar, not copied skill names from a datamine. After launch, replace placeholders with exact ability titles without abandoning the specialise rule.
What builds are not
Builds are not multiplayer role queues. CONTROL Resonant has no multiplayer. Builds are not Firebreak class charts. Builds are not photo-mode fashion — outfits from pre-order and editions do not equal Talents.
Also respect traversal boundaries: Reach, Shift, and Gravity Anomaly mastery still matter in fights, but NG+ will not simply hand every traversal toy back as if it were a combat stat. Learn movement on traversal during the first campaign.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for launch week, pre-orders, and first-hour combat.
How many abilities can I equip?
Preview builds describe six ability slots as two sets of three that you can hot-swap. Specialise each trio around a clear lane.
What is The Gap?
Dylan's mind-space, opened with Down on the d-pad, where you manage Aberrant trees, Talents, and abilities. Details also appear in combat.
How many Artifact slots exist?
Three on a standard run, with a fourth opening in New Game Plus alongside carried combat progression.
Should I unlock every Talent branch?
No. Fund the Primary you actually use, then support your Secondary. Generalist spreads felt weaker in preview reports.
Where should I rank weapon forms?
Use the Aberrant forms tier list for Flurry, Slash, Slice, Crush, and Extend preview grades.
