Traversal in CONTROL Resonant
Reach, Shift, Gravity Anomalies, and Manhattan movement that stays story-gated.
Manhattan in CONTROL Resonant is not a flat sidewalk simulator. Remedy is building a paranatural city where movement powers double as puzzle keys and combat multipliers. The campaign is still upcoming — digital 24 September 2026 — so this page catalogues the traversal verbs previews have named and the one NG+ rule players keep underestimating.
Cross-link this with Getting Started for first-hour pacing, controls for how those verbs are bound, combat for why dash and hover belong in DPS rotations, Metro Fault for the dungeon that unlocks Reach, and the Manhattan map for how Faults sit in zones.
The traversal kit Remedy has shown
Reach
Reach is the snag-and-pull / extend-your-presence tool that lets Dylan interact with distant anchors, yank himself through vertical space, or tug encounter pieces into range. In a Bureau-meets-city sequel, Reach is how ledges, signs, and altered fixtures become climbable grammar instead of invisible walls.
Use Reach when a route looks intentionally incomplete. If a plaza reads “almost connected,” the missing verb is often Reach, not a missing jump height upgrade.
Shift
Shift is short-range relocation with paranatural flavor — a blink-adjacent answer to Patterning geometry and blocked sightlines. In combat, Shift is how you re-establish backstab angles for Slice or escape a Mold bloom without sprinting through damage. In exploration, Shift stitches broken sidewalks and interior tears.
Shift is easy to waste as a panic button. The better habit is to Shift into a plan: onto a ledge, behind an elite, or through a Gravity Anomaly corridor you already scouted.
Gravity Anomalies
Gravity Anomalies are environmental characters. They flip local up-vectors, create floating lanes, and turn ordinary blocks into 3D jungle gyms. Trailer language and hands-on notes treat them as signature Manhattan spectacle — the thing that makes a street fight feel like an Oldest House wing spilled outdoors.
When you enter an Anomaly:
- Reorient before you swing. Whiffed Primaries are usually orientation errors.
- Look for chained Anomalies that form a route, not a single gimmick jump.
- Remember enemies use the same warped space; Hiss pathing and Resonant arena scripts will abuse verticality too.
Double jump, dash, double-dash, hover
These are the “always on” athletic layer once unlocked:
- Double jump — basic vertical forgiveness and juggle fuel.
- Dash / double-dash — horizontal commit tools for both map gaps and string cancels.
- Hover — micro-adjustment in air; critical for landing on thin Anomaly platforms and for delaying a heavy so it connects.
If combat feels sluggish, your traversal cadence is probably timid. The combat guide explains the aerial damage engine; this page is the map-side twin.
Manhattan zones versus dungeon spaces
Resonant splits fantasy between open Manhattan zones and tighter dungeon / interior problems.
Zones reward long Sightlines, chained Reach points, and optional side routes toward World Quests and collectibles. They are where completionists spend the difference between the ~30-hour core estimate and the ~50-hour everything estimate. Zoe’s radio still matters here — Zoe de Vera flags objectives without turning the city into a multiplayer hub. The game remains single-player only.
Dungeons / interiors compress the verbs. Expect clearer Shift gates, Anomaly puzzles with fewer alternate paths, and Resonant arenas that teach one movement idea under boss pressure. Clearing a Resonant can also change how you feel moving afterward because ability loadouts from The Gap alter crowd control options that fake “mobility.”
Do not assume every alley is available on first entry. Story-gated traversal is real. Backtracking is part of the loop once Reach or Shift expands.
Traversal as combat literacy
Dash through a swipe into a Flurry string, hover to keep Slash connected, Shift behind targets for Slice backstabs, and use Anomaly floors for Ground Slam or Push angles. Players who treat traversal as “only for chests” hit DPS walls that look like gear problems. Check movement first.
The NG+ rule you must not ignore
New Game Plus carries:
- Aberrant upgrades
- Abilities
- Talents
- Artifacts
- Health
New Game Plus does not carry traversal. Story gates reset. You will re-earn Reach, Shift, and related athletic unlocks on the NG+ timeline even if your damage numbers are already absurd. NG+ also adds a fourth Artifact slot and harder enemies — a power fantasy that still asks you to relearn the city’s locks.
Why publish that rule before launch? Because pre-order shoppers and theorycrafters plan wrong if they assume a Dark Souls-style full carry. Build for combat snowball; schedule a second tour of Manhattan’s gates. Start planning on builds and keep first-run expectations grounded via Getting Started.
Route habits and performance
Scout roofs early, mark dead ends that look one verb short, practice hover in safe plazas, and never spend Spec Points hoping to skip movement — those points are for Resonant respecs. Rebind Reach and Shift for comfort on day one (controls).
Frame pacing changes how dashes feel. Size your PC against system requirements (~120GB SSD, DLSS 4.5 / FSR 4.1). Consoles share the digital week; discs wait until 15 October 2026; Mac arrives later in 2026. Play Anywhere helps storefront hopping, not story gates.
Ignore rumored mounts or undocumented grapple meters until Remedy confirms them. Stick to Reach, Shift, Gravity Anomalies, double jump, dash/double-dash, and hover. Watch the trailers, note unnamed verbs, and revisit after patches. Move with intent — the Pattern already broke the grid.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for launch week, pre-orders, and first-hour combat.
What traversal abilities does CONTROL Resonant include?
Previews highlight Reach, Shift, Gravity Anomalies, double jump, dash/double-dash, and hover. Some unlocks are story-gated.
Does New Game Plus keep traversal unlocks?
No. NG+ carries Aberrant upgrades, abilities, talents, artifacts, and health — not traversal. You re-earn movement gates on the new run.
Is traversal separate from combat?
No. Dash, hover, and Shift feed aerial juggles and repositioning. Read the combat guide alongside this page.
Are Manhattan zones open from the start?
Not entirely. Zones and dungeons gate routes behind story traversal unlocks. Backtracking is expected after Reach or Shift expands.
