Getting Started in CONTROL Resonant
From the Oldest House into Manhattan — first loadout, Zoe’s radio, and The Gap.
CONTROL Resonant is still upcoming. Digital launch is 24 September 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam and Epic). Physical discs arrive 15 October 2026. This page is a first-hour briefing for players who want a clean start as Dylan Faden, not a spoiler dump of a campaign that is not in players’ hands yet.
If you only read three systems pages before launch, pair this with the combat guide, the traversal guide, and the controls overview. Edition shoppers should jump to the pre-order guide after they understand the melee fantasy.
Who you play
You are Dylan Faden, not Jesse. Jesse Faden is the Federal Bureau of Control Director — and she is missing when the Pattern hits New York. Remedy’s trailers and hands-on previews put you in Dylan’s boots as he leaves the Oldest House and steps into an altered Manhattan. The Bureau still talks to you. Your handler is Zoe de Vera, a radio presence who briefs objectives, flags threats, and keeps FBC procedure in your ear. She is not a second player; Resonant is single-player only with no multiplayer.
Returning Bureau voices include Emily Pope and Simon Arish. For sister context, skim Jesse Faden then return here for systems.
First hour shape
Preview builds leave Bureau space for Manhattan zones that mix street fights with paranatural set pieces: learn light/heavy swings and dodge, follow Zoe’s radio, pick a Primary identity, then face Resonant pressure that feeds The Gap. Remedy quotes roughly 30 hours for a core story and up to 50 hours with World Quests, Bounties, and collectibles — long enough that the first run’s exclusive Resonant branches matter.
Picking Flurry, Slash, or Slice
The Aberrant is a shapeshifting melee arm. You equip a Primary, a Secondary, and a combo-ender. Early Primary previews highlight three identities:
- Flurry — twin daggers, crit-leaning pressure, fast cancels.
- Slash — scythe arcs that punish groups and keep lanes clear.
- Slice — axe tempo built around backstab angles and committed swings.
Secondaries shown in previews include Crush (slow, heavy, charged) and Extend (long-reach charged). You do not need a perfect endgame theory on hour one, but you should lock a fantasy you enjoy. Rank the feel on the Aberrant forms tier list and sketch a lane on the builds page once you understand Talents and Artifacts.
Weapon attacks charge abilities. That loop is the heart of Resonant combat: swing to bank power, spend power on Resonant gifts, reset with mobility. Aerial juggles matter early — dash, double jump, and hover are damage tools, not just travel toys. Read the full loop in the combat guide.
The Gap without panic
The Gap is Dylan’s mind-space. Preview builds open it by holding Down on the d-pad. Inside, you manage abilities earned from Resonants — Pattern-twisted remnants of powerful people. You get six ability slots arranged as two banks of three you can swap between. Preview ability names include Barrage, Seekers, Shield, Heat Wave, Heat Aura, Push, and Ground Slam. Gamescom also showed Score Burst versus Growth when facing Mold pressure.
On a first clear of a Resonant, you pick one reward branch. Respecs cost Spec Points, so early mistakes are fixable, but Spec Points are a budget, not infinite candy. Do not freeze the campaign grinding for a mythical perfect tree before you have seen two bosses.
What not to grind in the opening hours
- Every side alley before you understand Reach and Shift — Manhattan exploration ramps with traversal unlocks. See traversal.
- Every Artifact slot theory before you know which Resonant gifts you kept. Artifacts matter; NG+ later adds a fourth Artifact slot, which is a hint that first-run loadouts are intentionally incomplete.
- Full map completionism on the assumption traversal will soft-carry into NG+. It will not. New Game Plus keeps Aberrant upgrades, abilities, talents, artifacts, and health — not story-gated traversal.
- Edition FOMO mid-tutorial. Sort Standard versus Digital Deluxe on the pre-order guide before launch week, not during your first Hiss fight.
Enemies you will actually meet
Preview footage and Remedy briefings group threats as Hiss, Mold, Pattern / Patterning, and Resonants. Do not treat them as identical red silhouettes. Hiss pressure often wants clean dodge windows. Mold asks for area denial and the right ability answer. Patterning warps space and rewards Shift literacy. Resonants are epicenter bosses that gate power.
Platform checklist and first-session plan
Confirm PS5, Xbox Series (Play Anywhere), or PC via Steam 3669870 / Epic. PC players should verify ~120GB SSD and the system requirements (DLSS 4.5 / FSR 4.1). Mac arrives later in 2026. DualSense and Xbox pads are supported; learn verbs on controls.
On session one: finish the Oldest House exit, listen to Zoe, commit to Flurry/Slash/Slice for a full beat, practice perfect dodges before the first Resonant, enter The Gap once, then respect Reach/Shift story gates. Deeper systems live on the Guides hub, combat, traversal, Resonants, and pre-order. Official site: controlgame.com. Director Mikael Kasurinen, Remedy’s Northlight engine, Annapurna co-finance. Hour-one rule: pick a melee identity, trust Zoe, and keep The Gap deliberate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for launch week, pre-orders, and first-hour combat.
Is CONTROL Resonant out yet?
No. Digital launch is 24 September 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Physical discs follow on 15 October 2026. Mac arrives later in 2026.
Who is the protagonist?
You play Dylan Faden. Jesse Faden is missing as FBC Director. Handler Zoe de Vera supports you by radio in a single-player campaign.
Which Aberrant form should I pick first?
Preview Primaries are Flurry (crit daggers), Slash (scythe groups), and Slice (axe backstabs). Pick the tempo you enjoy, then refine on the Aberrant forms and builds pages.
What is The Gap?
The Gap is Dylan’s mind-space for Resonant abilities. Preview builds open it by holding Down on the d-pad. You have six slots (3+3 swap) and respec with Spec Points.
Should I grind everything before the first boss?
No. Learn combat and traversal gates, pick one Resonant reward, and avoid perfectionism — the first run cannot take every ability branch.
